Antique Victorian Silver

By Steve Freeman of Silver2treasure

Antique Victorian Silver

The reign of Queen Victoria is associated with Britain's great age of industrial development, economic progress together with the growth of the British Empire.Even after her death,it was said, that England had a worldwide empire on which the sun would never set.

Queen Victoria married Prince Albert in 1840.Her marriage to Prince Albert brought nine children in the years between 1840 and 1857.Many of her children married into other Royal families in Europe.Queen Victoria died at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight,on 22 january 1901 after a reign which lasted close on 64 years.

Victorian sterling silver is therefore reflective of its age.The development of the Empire and the progress of the industrial revolution led to many new elaborate designs in silverware that has seldom been seen since.

These items of Silverware which were often seen as a visable representation of social position - were in high demand from a developing middle class happy to display their new found wealth.

This led to a band of highly skilled Silversmiths developing new techniques and high levels of craftmanship to create very desireable and expensives items of silverware for daily use.

These silver items are highly collectable today and a selection can always be found on our Silver2treasure website together with information of the Silversmiths concerned.
